CHICAGO (Reuters) - Record-breaking NHL coach and Hockey Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman has joined the Chicago Blackhawks as senior advisor, the team said on Thursday.

The 74-year-old Canadian, who won the Stanley Cup nine times as a head coach, has spent the past seven years working as a consultant for the Detroit Red Wings.

"We are privileged to welcome the legendary Scotty Bowman to the Chicago Blackhawks family," Blackhawks President John McDonough said in a statement.

"His hockey genius, vision and energy are a perfect fit with our goal to win the Stanley Cup."

The move to Chicago gives Bowman the opportunity to work with his son, Blackhawks assistant general manager Stan Bowman.

"It's certainly an exciting day for me and for the family," Bowman told reporters. "I wanted to work with my son Stan. It's a dream everyone has and it doesn't happen very often."

Bowman is the only man to lead three different teams to the Stanley Cup and has reached the league finals 13 times as a coach.

He won the Cup with the Montreal Canadiens (in 1973, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979), Pittsburgh Penguins (1992) and Red Wings (1997, 1998 and 2002).

Bowman moved into coaching after a head injury ended his playing career and took his first head coaching job the St. Louis Blues during their expansion season in 1967-68 at the age of 34.
