Wheatland Beats Riverton In A Legion Championship
Legion Baseball

In a re-match of last years state single A championship legion baseball contest Wheatland has again defeated Riverton 17-7.

Wheatland went undefeated in the state tournament and on to a second straight championship. Riverton struck first in the top of the 2nd scoring twice. Wheatland would answer with 3 in the bottom of the first and never look back. The Lobos added 3 more in the second to burry Riverton 6-2 early. They would pour another trio of runs on in the 4th going up 9-2.

Riverton chipped away at the lead in the top of the 5th scoring 4 runs, but the Lobos erased all hope in the bottom of the 6th exploding for 7 runs on 6 hits. Both added one more the 7th, including a walk off Eric Heatherly sac fly to force the ten-run mercy rule.

Wheatland didn't have a single strikeout at the plate.

Kelly Simonton was named the state tournament MVP for Wheatland.

Wheatland now travels to Anacortes, Washington for the regional championships to face state winners from around the region.

Congratulations to the Raiders. For a second year in a row, the "overlooked Raiders" have shown up at the state tournament and proven that Riverton baseball should not be taken lightly. It may have been a bigger feat this year because they limped into state with their ace pitcher all but out of service, and only 10 ball players that stuck out the season. Those ten kids left the field with their gas gauge below empty and you can't ask for any more than that. Good Job.
