DETROIT (Reuters) - The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract on Tuesday, hoping the right-hander can be ready to contribute in September, baseball website mlb.com reported.
Garcia, 33, was 1-5 with a 5.90 in earned run average for the Philadelphia Phillies last season before having season-ending surgery on his throwing shoulder.
The nine-year major league veteran has been working his way back into pitching shape and been auditioned by a number of teams besides the Tigers, currently in third place in the AL Central.
Garcia has a 117-76 career record. The Venezuelan also has pitched for the Mariners and White Sox.
