Devon pumps CO2 underground for more oil

August 14, 2008 - 09:38 a.m. EST

RIVERTON, WYOMING - Devon Energy is wrapping up construction of a $100 million carbon dioxide pipeline and injection facility south of Riverton.

The company already is buying carbon dioxide from an Exxon Mobil natural gas processing plant and pumping the gas underground to help revive a depleted oil field. The process is expected to boost the field's production more than tenfold.

The process increases production because the carbon dioxide makes the oil less thick, enabling it to flow more easily into wells. Devon began pumping carbon dioxide underground at the facility in July and expects to ramp up production later this year.
