Tampa Bay to play Slovakia exhibition game

August 16, 2008 - 12:00 a.m. EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Tampa Bay Lightning will play an exhibition game against Slovakia's HC Slovan before their opening regular season game in Prague against the New York Rangers, the National Hockey League said on Friday.

The Sept 30 contest in Bratislava will be the first NHL exhibition game played in Slovakia.

The Lightning meet the Rangers in their 2008-09 season opener at the 02 Arena in Prague on Oct 4-5 when Ottawa Senators also meet Pittsburgh Penguins in Stockholm.

It will be the first time two NHL games have been staged in Europe the same day.

The NHL played its first regular-season games in Europe in 2007 when the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings contested a two-game series in London. The NHL also hosted three successful Game One events in Japan in 1997, 1998, and 2000.
