MIAMI (Reuters) - The Miami Dolphins released offensive lineman Steve McKinney on Monday, three months after signing the 10-year league veteran as a free agent.

A fourth-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 1998, McKinney had been brought in to bolster an offense that ranked 28th of 32 teams last season.

"At this point he wasn't where we thought we needed to have him," head coach Tony Sparano told reporters before team practice.

McKinney was a starter in his first eight seasons in the league, from 1998 to 2001 with the Colts and from 2002 to 2005 with the Houston Texans.

After allowing nine sacks in 2005 he became a part-time center for Houston in 2007 and played only three games last season before suffering a knee injury.
