Motor racing-Kubica hopes for BMW improvement at Silverstone

July 3, 2008 - 12:00 a.m. EST

GOODWOOD, England, July 2 (Reuters) - Formula One high-fliers BMW-Sauber hope to be back up to speed in Sunday's British Grand Prix after a dip in France last month, Poland's Robert Kubica said on Wednesday.

"I think we can be back on our normal place, not like in Magny-Cours where we have been struggling quite a lot with low speed corners, with grip in low speed corners," he told Reuters television at the Goodwood circuit in southern England.

"I hope the gap will be not too big to the front runners like Ferrari and McLaren."

Kubica led the championship after winning in Canada in a BMW-Sauber one-two but the 23-year-old is now second overall, two points behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa, after finishing fifth in France.

"In Magny-Cours the gap was pretty big so we need to improve, we need to develop the car," he said.

"I hope will come sooner or later quite a big step and then maybe we can be back there between them (Ferrari and McLaren)."

Kubica has repeatedly played down his title chances, likening himself recently to a David against lots of Goliaths, and he said consistency was his best hope of staying among the contenders.

"The strategy is very simple. Score as many points as possible," he said of the weekend ahead.

"I am approaching the season race by race trying to achieve as many points as possible and trying somehow like in Magny-Cours to minimise the damages.

"We were probably not there with the pace but still managed to finish fifth.

"As I am saying I am not a title contender for the moment but it might change, for now I think I have to be consistent, I have to score points every single Grand Prix and then see what will come out."
