The Fremont County sheriff’s office issued a warning this week about a scam based on a caller leaving a voice message to call back on foreign prefixes. Prefixes used include 809 for the Dominican Republic, 284 for British Virgin Islands and 876 for Jamaica.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jerry Evagelatos said: “The caller will leave a message asking you to call them back at a number beginning with one of three area codes. If you do call the number, they will try and keep you on the phone for as long as possible to increase the charges.â€
He said: “The shock comes when you get your phone bill. It will be extremely difficult to complain about the charges because you did actually make the call.â€
